The holiday season is underway, and many homeowners will be installing holiday lights while decorating their homes. Holiday lights can give your home a festive, holiday feel, but if the proper precautions aren’t taken this can be a dangerous endeavor for your safety and the safety of your roof. According the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are over 15,000 injuries each year related to holiday decorating. Before you begin hanging those decorative lights this holiday season, it is important to be aware of the safety measures you can take to reduce the chances of sustaining an injury or causing unnecessary damage to your roof.

Tips on Holiday Lighting Without Damaging Your Roof

  • Avoid going on the roof if possible: First and foremost, if at all possible, avoid going on the roof all together. The less time spent walking on the roof, the longer your roof will last. If you can’t resist placing the lights or decorations in locations that require going on the roof, make sure you wear safe footwear and use a sturdy ladder. Also, avoid the part of the roof with the highest pitch (slope).
  • Ladder safety: Make sure the ladder you are using is dry and not missing any pieces or broken. Avoid placing the ladder directly against the gutters as this can cause damage. While on the ladder avoid extending beyond your natural, comfortable reach.
  • Preplan: Untangle lights and have decorations ready before you go up on the ladder or roof. Check for frayed wires or bad bulbs that can lead to a potential fire hazard. Ensure that any extension cords used are safe for outdoor use.
  • Use Light Clips and Ensure Lights and Decorations are Secure: Light clips are a must! Do not use staple guns, screws or nails. When taking the lights down do not pull because you can rip the gutter off with the lights. Also make sure rooftop decorations are secure so they do not fall over or blow around and leave unnecessary damage to your roof.

Decorating your home for the holidays should be a fun, fulfilling project that leaves your home looking beautiful for the holidays. By following the above tips, you can reduce the chances that you sustain an injury or your roof gets damaged in the process.
