What to Expect from Your Roof?

Wind and rain are the two greatest contributors to roof damage in Southwest Florida. While wind can blow shingles off a roof, rainwater has the potential to collect and eventually break through the roof. Skylights, chimneys, erosion, and poor maintenance can contribute to roof leaks during heavy rain. Keeping roofs maintained, free of debris, and draining properly will help ensure your roof will survive a heavy rain. Heavy rain may result in the need for emergency patching or covering however.

Emergency Roof Patching

Emergency roof patching may be necessary should you encounter a roof leak during heavy rain. If patching is necessary you should first identify the source of the leak. Next you will need to make a temporary patch at the source of the leak using roofing tar and a shingle or plywood. Using a putty knife place the roofing tar on the underside of the roof deck and push the shingle or plywood into the tar. Finally tar around the shingle or plywood. Being familiar with how to patch a roof in the event of a leak will lessen the damage incurred from a roof leak during heavy rain.

Emergency Roof Covering

An emergency roof covering may be necessary during heavy rain. If so, you may need a roof tarp or heavy-duty plastic covering. Polyethylene is recommended should you need to build a temporary roof cover. Be sure to cover more of the area than necessary as it is always better to be safe than sorry.
While Florida may be known as the Sunshine State, it frequently encounters heavy rain. It is especially important to have a strong, durable roof that is maintained, free of debris, and properly draining. While a knowledgeable experienced roofer can assist you in fixing or replacing a roof, patching or emergency roof covering may be necessary during a heavy rain storm.
