Drainage Systems for Flat Roofs

Drainage Systems for Flat Roofs

Due to gravitational forces, flat roofs have the potential to collect and hold water.  Without an effective drainage system, different problems may arise.  These problems can include debris buildup, standing water (which can cause a roof to buckle), the ruining of seals in rooftop systems, stress on the building’s structure, or leaks in various places.   There are three main types of drainage systems for flat roofs: drains, gutters, and scuppers.  Each drainage system has its pros and cons.

Drains

  • Similar to shower drains, usually placed where water needs to be drained from
  • Connected to pipes, drains water in opposite direction of the structure
  • Pros: visually appealing because no gutters or downpipes are necessary, can be placed in ideal position on roof
  • Cons: Debris can clog strainer, more costly than gutters or scuppers

Gutters

  • Used to catch water on the edge of a roof and funnel it away from building using downspouts
  • Pros: Inexpensive, Controls water flow away from the structure
  • Cons: Regular cleaning and maintenance required from debris such as leaves that block water flow

Scuppers

  • Work similarly to gutters, funnel water away from building
  • Used when a building’s roof is located over flower beds, water is directed from the roof towards them
  • Pros: Keeps water away from walls and foundations of building
  • Cons: Don’t work as well on flat roofs as pitched roofs

It is important to be aware that in Southwest Florida heavy rains and wind are especially difficult on a roof.   Drains, gutters, and scuppers are the three primary drainage systems used for flat roofs.  A knowledgeable roofer can advise and recommend specific solutions for your roofing needs.
